Worked examples

Example 1

Three wholes in fourths

Write 3 as a fraction with denominator 4.

  1. One whole contains four fourths.
  2. Three wholes contain 4 + 4 + 4 = 12 fourths.
  3. Keep fourths as the part size and write 12/4.

3 = 12/4

Example 2

Recognize complete wholes

How many whole units are represented by 8/4?

  1. Four fourths make one whole.
  2. Split the eight fourths into two groups of four fourths.
  3. Each group is one whole.

8/4 = 2

Common questions

Can the denominator be 1?

Yes. A part of size 1/1 is a whole. For example, 3/1 equals 3.

Can zero be written as a fraction?

Yes. Zero selected parts gives 0/2, 0/3, or another fraction with numerator 0 and a nonzero denominator. Each equals 0.
